This article will unravel some of the mysteries and secrets about learning how to tattoo and point you to three resources where you can learn how to tattoo.

Tattooing is a mysterious art, and most artists will NEVER train anyone unless they're paid or get a couple years free work from you as an apprentice, and some will want both pay from you and free work.

It wasn't too long ago that you could list all the tattoo artist in the USA on one sheet of paper. And these tattoo artist kept their art in their families and NEVER taught strangers how to tattoo.

In fact if it wasn't for rebels like Bill Pogue many of today's tattoo artists would not be in business. The art would still be held in closely knit families tattooing around military bases.

While there are many more artists today, there is still a lot of secrecy about tattooing. Most artists were trained in an apprenticeship, so they feel that is the only way to learn how to tattoo. Considering what many of them had to endure to learn to tattoo, you can't really blame them.

On the other hand it can take years to learn to tattoo like that. The artist who trains you knows …. if they teach you… they are training their own competition. When you look at it like that it takes on a whole different meaning. But some artists are not afraid of the competition and have a willingness to share the art with certain talented artist, but they are few and far between.

So if you can find someone to teach you, you will get the most thorough instruction from a competent tattoo artist over a long term apprenticeship, but they are very hard to find.

What about Tattoo Schools, are they worth the money?

The first tattoo school in the USA (the worlds only tattoo school) was opened by Bill Pogue in Michigan, (now in Shreveport, LA). in the 1960's (more info and videos on my sites about that school).

Lately Tattoo Schools popping up everywhere, most are unlicensed, so you will need to ask for a copy of the tattoo school's license. But even so, a license has little to do with the skill of the artist or their ability to train you to tattoo. And there's a big difference in learning for a gifted teacher who knows how to transfer his skills and techniques to you and one who can't.

I spent more then 10-weeks (over a couple of years) at one tattoo school observing and filming (videos on my site) different tattoo classes and hundreds of students learning to tattoo. I can tell you this, if you come to a competent school with skilled instructors who hold nothing back, you can absolutely learn to tattoo at tattoo school.

Tattoo school is not cheap (usually around $6,000us + food + Travel) so be prepared for that. Normally the classes are around two-weeks. They are intensive and they move pretty fast. The idea is you're learning “in two-weeks” what is taught in an 2-year apprenticeship. With a skilled instructor, utilizing a proven “hands on” teaching system… what you can learn is amazing. I can vouch for the WOTS as being well worth the money.

Are there any good ways to learn to tattoo at home?

It's difficult to teach a skill like tattooing without actually being hands on. Many tattoo techniques that must be shown in real time (while they're being done) not to mention safety concerns. And there are books and kits that do a pretty good job, but until recently I would have had to say most learn at home systems were a good way to get information but a hard way to learn tattoo. However recently a new high quality 20 video course has been released by a long time practicing tattoo artist.

These videos are down-loadable and walk you through learning to tattoo in a step-by-step, easy training that builds your skills and confidence over each video. This is the by far the least expensive way to learn to tattoo. And well worth checking out.

Los Angeles, California January 26, 2007: With popular culture's recent interest in tattoo arts, it's no surprise that the web has been inundated with various tattoo related sites. Perform a search in Google, and you'll be amazed by variety of results. Some sites function as an introduction to a tattoo artist or studio, while there are some that gleam the web for pictures and stories surrounding tattoo culture. Other sites are merely portals hoping to make a quick buck off tattoo flash. However in my search, I happened to stumble across a tattoo blog that dares to offer the chronicle of two brothers learning to tattoo themselves. This should be good.

"Ink Trails" is a journal of two brothers, Jason and David who set out to learn how to tattoo while documenting the entire process. The blog starts out with the simple premise that one need not have a desire to tattoo professionally to work within the medium. According to comments posted on the site, a traditional tattoo apprenticeship can be very difficult to find, and can require the student to spend years working as a lackey before ever laying the needle to skin. Tattoo artists tend to be very territorial, as teaching an eager student their hard earned skills can create instant competition and are a liability to their main source of income. There is also those that see tattooing as a trade and therefore expect those interested in learning to be wholly committed to learning the craft as tradition has prescribed. If TLC's Miami Ink is any indication, the job of an apprentice can consist of little more than moping floors and answering phones for years before they are entrusted with the knowledge of the trade.

While the first few posts on the site document the trials of finding out what supplies they will need and how to operate the equipment, it's the posts of their work that provide the most interesting reads. Filled with stories, pictures, and even video clips of each tattoo, Jason (the main author) documents the mistakes made and lessons learned with earnest voice and a remarkable clarity. One of their first tattoos on a friend even shows a video clip of the exact moment when David fudges a line! While I'm glad it wasn't me, it's this kind of unflinching honesty that makes the site stand out from so many other sites trying to capitalize on the upsurge in popularity.

Surprisingly, in a little over three months, the work featured on the site has improved dramatically. Many of the new completed pieces actually have a rough, yet stylized traditional quality to them. Of the most recent, David finished a sailor tattoo based on a traditional flash design that looks authentic. They seem to be getting increasingly more comfortable with the tools and their work speaks to this fact.

While the brothers caution that they are not in the business of teaching anyone the right way to tattoo, they sure offer enough information to get the newcomer started. For any body interested in learning to tattoo, or just understanding more about what goes into the tattooing process, this site is an invaluable resource. Keep up the good work, fellas!
